What is UTM Research Fellowship Scheme?

Research Fellowship Scheme is a program developed to appoint PhD graduates to carry out full-time and part-time research activities in a specific research field to achieve excellence in research and innovation in order to produce scientific publications.

This program can also establish strategic relationships with well-known researchers abroad.

What are the fellow categories under the Research Fellowship Scheme?

There are two categories of fellows under this program, namely Postdoctoral Fellows and Research Fellows.

What is the difference between a Postdoctoral Fellow and a Research Fellow?

Postdoctoral Fellows are fellows who are appointed to carry out full-time research activities at UTM and cannot hold other positions/jobs during their appointment at UTM. While Research Fellows are fellows who are appointed to carry out research activities on a part-time basis and are abroad. Research Fellows can also be appointed among researchers who have successfully obtained study places at leading R&D institutes overseas.

What is the source of funding for the UTM Research Fellowship Scheme?

Funding sources are different depending on the type of research grant. This scheme can be financed by government sources, industry and also external institutions.

What are the categories of fellows under these three (3) sources?

Only Postdoctoral Fellows have more than one (1) category due to different funding sources. There are three (3) categories of post-doctoral fellows, namely:

  1. Post-doctoral fellow appointed by UTM fund
  2. Post-doctoral fellows appointed under research grants (sources external to UTM)
  3. Sponsored postdoctoral fellow – financial control by the sponsor, funds are not channeled to UTM for management.
What are the conditions, criteria and responsibilities of fellows?

What is the application method to appoint a fellow under this scheme?

The application must be made by the Project Leader/Supervisor candidate by registering the grant (the type of grant is according to the funding source) in the RADIS system.

No delivery of hard copy application documents is required.

When does the UTM Research Fellowship Scheme application open?

UTM Research Fellowship Scheme applications are open on:

UTM fund-appointed post-doctoral fellows – Open on March 1 every year.

Postdoctoral fellows appointed under research grants (UTM external sources) – Open throughout the year according to the grant’s active period.

Sponsored postdoctoral fellows – Open throughout the year subject to sponsor approval.

How long does this application process/timeline take?

The appointment of fellows under the UTM fund will take two (2) months from the time the offer is made until the notification of the decision to the applicant.

Appointments under other funding sources are subject to the approval timelines of sponsors, supervisors and the Fellows Scheme Appointments and Management Committee.

How will the result be notified/response to the application?

Application results will be emailed to the Project Leader/ Supervisor.

The offer letter will also be emailed to the candidate.

Candidates who do not receive an email are considered unsuccessful and appeals are not allowed.

Who is responsible for the appointed fellows?

UTM researchers appointed as Project Leaders/Supervisors must be responsible for ensuring that all conditions, duties and responsibilities are complied with by fellows.

The Research Management Center (RMC) is responsible for communicating appointment and welfare information to supervisors and fellows.

What visa is required to be in Malaysia?

Non-citizen post-doctoral fellows must obtain an employment visa when appointed as a fellow at UTM. Visa applications will be managed by RMC and approval is dependent on the Malaysian Immigration Department. Visa costs will be covered under the Project Leader grant

Will the fellow be subject to income tax?

All postdoctoral fellows and research fellows who receive wages in the form of monthly salaries by UTM will be subject to income tax. Tax matters are under the management of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB). The tax percentage is different according to the residency status of each fellow. Fellows are fully responsible for their own tax affairs.
