RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP SCHEME UTM

Research Fellowship Scheme UTM is a program designed to appoint PhD graduates who can conduct full-time research activities in niche research areas towards excellence in research and innovation and producing scientific literature.


This program also facilitates the establishment of strategic relationships with recognized researchers internationally.

Fellowship category under Research Fellowship Scheme :

1. Felo Pasca Doktoral (Postdoctoral Fellow)
2. Felo Penyelidikan (Research Fellow)

Postdoctoral Fellow:

– Appointed to carry out full-time research activities in UTM.
– Can not held others position/occupation during whole appointment period.

Research Fellow refers to a fellow that is appointed to carry out part-time research activities and is positioned outside of the country. Research Fellow can also be appointed among researchers who have successfully secured a place for further studies at notable international R&D institutes.

Source of funding for Research Fellowship Scheme UTM differs depending on the type of research grant. This scheme can be funded by government, industry and international institutes.

Postdoctoral Fellow Category :

1. Postdoctoral Fellow appointment under UTM funds
2. Postdoctoral Fellow appointment under research grant (UTM external funds)
3. Sponsored Postdoctoral Fellow – Finance managed by sponsor and is not channeled to UTM for management.

The criteria or requirements for application and appointment, guidelines, fellow’s responsibilities, and other welfare benefits obtained by the fellow have been listed within the criteria of the scheme, which can be accessed on the Research Management Centre (RMC)’s website: https://rmc.utm.my/download-research-funding/

The application method for appointing a fellow under this scheme must be done by the candidate’s Project Leader/Supervisor by applying for grant registration (type of grant will be according to the source of fund) in the RADIS system.

No submission of application documents in hardcopies is needed.

Opening for UTM Fellowship Scheme application will be open on :

1. Postdoctoral Fellow appointment under UTM funds – Open on 1 March every year
2. Postdoctoral Fellow appointment under research grant (UTM external funds) – Open throughout the year according to active period of grant
3. Postdoctoral Fellow Sponsored – Open throughout the year depending on sponsor’s approval

Application process for fellow appointment under UTM funds will take up to two (2) months depending on the timeline of sponsor’s approval, supervisor and Fellow Scheme Selection & Management Committee.

Application results will be notified/announced through :

  1. Results will be emailed to Supervisor/Project Leader.
  2. Candidates will receive the offer letter to be signed and returned to management within seven (7) days.
  3. Candidates who did not receive or reply to the email will be considered as unsuccessful candidates and appeals are not allowed.

UTM researchers that have been appointed as Project Leader/ Supervisors are responsible in the ensuring the fellows adhere to all terms, duties and responsibilities.

Research Management Centre (RMC) is also responsible for delivering information regarding appointments and welfare to the supervisors and fellows.  

VISA needed to stay in Malaysia are:

  1. Non-citizens Post Doctoral Fellows must obtain an employment visa/study visa during the appointment as fellows in UTM.
    2. Visa applications will be handled by RMC and the approval will depend on the Immigration Department of Malaysia.
    3. The visa costs will be covered under the Project Leader’s grant.

All Post Doctoral and Research Fellows that receive monthly salary from UTM will be charged with income tax.

Tax affairs fall under the management of Inland Revenue Board Of Malaysia (LHDN).

Tax percentage will differ according to the residency status of each fellow.

Fellows are fully responsible in managing their own tax affairs.
